Hank Gathers was a star player for Loyola Marymount College in Los Angeles California. It was well known that he had a heart condition but he still played. He was playing in the west coast conference tournament on Friday, March 3rd. His family was in town as he scored 28 points as his team won by 37. "I feel great. I'm in the best shape of my life. My mom's out here, and I'm looking forward to some good home cooking." is what Gathers told a reporter after his game. The next day was the semi-finals. In the middle of the game he received a pass from his teammate and he went to high-five him. After he high fived him, he took two steps and collapsed. After gathers collapsed they canceled the west coast tournament. Even though the tournament was canceled loyola marymount still got the conference bid to the NCAA tournament. They went on to go to the elite eight as a 11 seed.
