jan 1, 1842 - Prigg v. Pennsylvania

Description:

A U.S. Supreme Court Case which ruled the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 overruled a Pennsylvania law which banned African Americans from being removed from the state into slavery.

Cause: Fugitives would run north to escape slavery, causing northern sympathizing states to pass laws keeping slave hunters from taking them back to their southern owners.

Effect: Court ruled that the laws were unconstitutional because the slaves were property.
