aug 12, 1961 - The Berlin Wall

Description:

East and West Berlin were very different. The US made sure everybody in West Berlin had everything they needed. Whereas in East Berlin, the people were suffering under the Soviet Union's control. Many people escaped from East Berlin by simply crossing the border. The Soviet Union did not like this. They tried telling America that we couldn't do that but JFK responded by saying: "We cannot and will not permit the Communists to drive us out of Berlin," This made the Soviet Union angry because they knew that JFK was set on his decision. They had to come up with another plan, instead. That is how they came up with the idea of building a wall. They made a wall out of barbed wire and cement to block their citizens from escaping to West Berlin. The wall was a sign of division between the East and West for the next three decades of the Cold War.
