jan 1, 1976 - Small and Cronquist

Description:

Small and Cronquist propose the Cannabis genus is comprised of one species, Cannabis sativa, composed of two subspecies, Cannabis sativa spp. sativa and Cannabis sativa spp. indica. They then attempted to break up subspecies further based on inebriating qualities, ferility, and geographic origin.

Small and Cronquist labeled all drug type varieties of Cannabis sativa as subspecies "indica" - criticized by other researchers as inappropriate as it does not distinguish between drug type varieties of Cannabis that are distinctly unique to the Afghanistan region versus India.
