aug 18, 1920 - 19th Amendment

Description:

The 19th Amendment legally guarantees women the right to vote. This right is also known as women’s suffrage. This amendment states that the right to vote can not be denied by any state in the US on account of sex. Many people in the US worked hard for the passing of this amendment. This milestone did not come without hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance, and it required a long and difficult struggle, the victory took decades of agitation and protests. Starting in the middle of the 19th century, several groups that supported women’s right to vote lectured, wrote, marched, rallied, and used civil disobedience to achieve this radical change in the Constitution. Many of the early supporters and protesters didn’t even live to see the final victory of their hard work. The demand to vote was the centerpiece of the women's rights movement. However, even after the 19th amendment was passed, black women still faced opposition and intimidation when at the polls or when trying to register to vote. It took more than 40 years for all women to achieve voting equality.
