Description:
- British had been increasingly controlling parts of India
- Employed Indian troops called Sepoys who were Hindu and Muslim
- Rumors about new gun cartridges lubricated with cow or pig grease caused outrage because to Hindus, cows were sacred, and to Muslims, pigs were unsanitary
- Sepoys revolted but were stopped by other native Indian troops who were loyal to British
- Demonstrated the tension within India and that Indians were unhappy with British control
