While the slave trade had been thriving in Africa since the Bantu migration, the 1440s marked the beginnings of European interest in the slave trade. Portugal had a very small population, but due to their naval success, a large amount of power. So, the Portugese established dependence on chattel slavery. The trans-atlantic slave trade was brutal and inhumane.
