Description:

This disease was marked as the largest waterborne outbreak documented in US history. It is suspected that The Howard Avenue Water Purification Plant, one of two water treatment plants in Milwaukee at the time, was contaminated. The contamination was suspected to have been caused due to a broken filter. Due to this one little mistake, 403,000 people in Milwaukee, Wisconsin were affected. About 69 people died. 7 days after the water was contaminated, it was suggested that residents should boil their water. People still were able to get the disease through washing hands, bathing, washing clothes and showering. The cause of the outbreak was because a Cryptosporidium oocysts got through the filtration process, therefore contaminating water throughout the city. The plant eventually shut down. THe outbreak lasted roughly 2 weeks. At the end, Milwaukee spent over 510 million dollars trying to repair and pay for every ones medical bills
