nov 19, 1863 - President Lincoln Delivers His Famous Gettysburg Adress

Description:

“Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” This is the opening of the Gettysburg Adress, a speech given by Abraham Lincoln on November 18th, 1863. He gave this speech in Gettysburg dedicating a national military cemetery for the Union soldiers who had fallen in the Battle of Gettysburg. The speech was short, only ten sentences long, with 272 words, and delivered in just over two minutes. The speech was very influential to the Union as it highlighted Lincoln’s hopes for the nation. The quote “that all men are created equal” is referring to slavery, specifically, the fight to abolish slavery. “The world will little note, nor longer what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” There is irony in this statement, as the speech Lincoln gave here is one of the best of all time, and people of the modern time sometimes forget the lives laid down for the United States of America. This is something that should never be forgotten, the sacrifice in the Battle of Gettysburg and the speech following it.
