The Battle of Bull Run was the first full-scale battle of the American Civil War. This battle was fought on July 21, 1861, in Fairfax County and Prince William County, Virginia. The Union was led by Irvin McDowell and the Confederacy was led by P. G. T. Beauregard. The Union was outnumbered in this battle with 28,450 forces engaged; the Confederacy had 32,320 forces engaged. The Federals had the upper hand in the morning of this engagement but gave the Confederates time to reinforce their front line. The Confederacy stands as firm as a stone wall rallied by Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson. This is where the general got his nickname “Stone Wall Jackson.” This battle really brought into perspective how long and bloody this war would be. 4,878 casualties occurred in this battle, 2,896 belonging to the Union and 1,982 to the Confederacy. The battle ended with the Confederacy victorious.
