aug 13, 1961 - Sit-in movement

Description:

Black protesters started doing sit-ins; a tactic of nonviolent civil disobedience. The protesters enter a business or a public place and remain seated until forcibly evicted or until their grievances are answered.

The sit-in movement produced a new sense of pride and power for African Americans. By rising up on their own and achieving substantial success protesting against segregation in the society in which they lived, many realized that they could change their communities with local coordinated action.
