apr 27, 1918 - Spanish Flu

Description:

This illness mainly started in trenches, and then spread when soldiers came back home. It wasn’t Spanish (Spain was neutral during the war). However, Spanish journalists were the only ones writing about it because the warring countries censored their journalists in order to keep morale up.

It's the 2nd or 3rd deadliest plague in history. 500,000 die in the US (current population was 106 million). 30 million die worldwide.

Economy damaged as people stopped gathering + going to places (ex. Stadiums).
