jan 29, 1930 - Hawley-Smoot Tariff
Description:
It was exponentially higher than the Fordney-McCumber Act and affected 40+ items. It started in the House as a reasonable protective measure for farmers. However, by the time it was passed, it had been amended multiple times and turned out to be the highest protective tariff in the nation’s peacetime history. It angered many other countries; it hurt worldwide trade and widened trade gaps. It worsened the depression for the US and many other countries. It led the US further into economic isolationism.
