feb 17, 1903 - Platt Amendment

Description:

The US forced Cuba to write the Platt Amendment into their constitution before withdrawing from Cuba.

The amendment said that US had the right to veto Cuban treaties and could prevent Cuba from borrowing money from Europe (US forced this amend because it wanted to enforce the Monroe Doctrine and keep Europe away from US).

The amendment also allowed US to intervene in Cuba w/ troops whenever they liked. Cuba also promised to sell or lease needed coaling or naval stations to the US. The Platt Amend was abrogated 1934.
