Description:

The US gained Puerto Rico (PR) in the Spanish-American war. Puerto Ricans became American citizens (could be drafted) but PR didn’t get statehood. Many Puerto Ricans moved north to find work. Faced much racism but did better economically.

US built naval bases there and used it to protect the (future) panama canal.
