feb 11, 1898 - USS Maine
Description:
- USS Maine = US battelship (on standby near Cuba to evacuate Americans if there’s a rebellion).
- It explodes, 260 dead
- No one is really sure why it exploded. Hearst and Pulitzer blame the Spanish (without evidence) which causes the public supports war (mostly).
- Spain is offended that the US is blaming them. “1. We didn’t do it. 2. How dare you say we did.”
1970s: US navy figures out why it exploded; one of the boilers overheated next the the weapons room *boom* (Spain wasn’t the cause. Oops).
