I little more info on the Earl of Argyll

The Earl of Argyll Rebellion, also known as the Argyll Rising, was a failed attempt to overthrow James II and VII, King of Scotland and England, in 1685. It was led by Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, a Scottish nobleman who opposed James's attempts to restore Catholicism in Scotland.

Argyll had previously supported the Whig party and had played a role in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, which had also aimed to depose James II. However, after the Monmouth Rebellion failed, Argyll fled to the Netherlands and began plotting another rebellion.

In May 1685, Argyll and a small group of followers landed in Scotland with the aim of raising support for their cause. However, they were quickly defeated by government forces and Argyll was captured and later executed. The rebellion was seen as a significant setback for the Whig cause and helped to consolidate James's grip on power.
