feb 10, 1664 - George Fox

Description:

1624 - 1691
George Fox was an English Dissenter and founder of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. He was born in Leicestershire, England and raised in a Puritan family.

In the mid-1640s, Fox began to have religious experiences and visions which led him to question traditional forms of worship and seek a direct personal relationship with God. He became an itinerant preacher, traveling throughout England and spreading his message of "inner light" and spiritual equality among all people.

Fox's teachings and the growth of the Quaker movement faced opposition from both the Church of England and other Protestant groups. He was imprisoned several times for his beliefs and for refusing to swear oaths or participate in the established church's sacraments.

Despite persecution, the Quaker movement grew and spread to other parts of Europe and the American colonies. Fox himself traveled to America in the late 1600s and helped establish Quaker communities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
