mar 8, 1886 - Haymarket Affair
Description:
Causes:
- Workers wanted higher wages.
- Before this, police killed a protesting worker (kinda by accident).
The next day: workers protest for wages and against police brutality. Someone throws dynamite at police (killing one and hurting several). Police return fire in response. The number of killed isn’t clear, but it’s in the dozens.
People at hospitals with bullet wounds are arrested, causing many to try to treat their wounds themselves (led to more death).
Most of the public blames the Knights of Labor; membership drops and groups like it get less popular.
4 anarchists (people who gave speeches that day) were executed.
