feb 10, 1887 - Dawes Act

Description:

This act was about assimilation and 'americanizing' natives. A popular slogan was “Kill the Indian, save the man.”

It dissolved tribes (the US no longer recognized them). It broke up reservations and divided them among families. It denied citizenship for Natives for 25 years (later prolonged).

In addition: around this time, the US started sending native kids to re-education camps.
