1770 The Dutch claim the Gamtoos River, 700 kilometers east of Cape Town, as their eastern border in South Africa.1771 By the Gamtoos River, clashes occur between Xhosa people and Dutch trekkers (pastoral wagon pullers).
1779 The Dutch have claimed their eastern boundary in South Africa 200 miles beyond their previous boundary, the Gamtoos River. Another war has begun with the Xhosa.
