Description:
John Brown (a famous abolitionist who killed 5 pro-slavery men in Kansas) led a group to raid a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, w/ plans to start a slave uprising w/ the weapons. They successfully storm the armory, but the US army comes the next day and defeats them.
Significance: convinced more and more southerners that their northern neighbors were bent on the destruction of the “peculiar institution” (Slavery) that sustained them
