feb 5, 1850 - Compromise of 1850
Description:
Temporarily prevents civil war. California, which gained a large population from the gold rush, applied for statehood. It was on both sides of the 36*30' line so no one knew if it should be a slave or free state.
The compromise:
- CA admitted as a free state
- The slave trade was outlawed in Washington DC.
- The remaining parts of the Mexican Cession were divided into Utah and New Mexico. Both would decide on slavery by popular sovereignty.
- Congress would pass a strict Fugitive Slave Act.
