apr 28, 1657 - Refusal of the crown
Description:
Cromwell's advisors thought about what would be the best way to secure the stability and legitimacy of the government this was because it was the end of the major general rule and now a new parilment was coming into power in April. Some advisors argued that Cromwell should accept the crown and become king, while others feared that this move would be unpopular and could lead to a backlash.
Ultimately, Cromwell decided to reject the crown and instead take the title of Lord Protector, which he had held since 1653. He believed that this title would be more acceptable to the people of England and would allow him to govern with greater legitimacy.
