This tension between LAPD and the Black community in South Central Los Angeles culminated into the Watts Riots of 1965. On August 11, 1965 a highway patrol officer arrested Marquette Frye, a young Black man for speeding. Unrest began as a large crowd surrounded the officers that attempted to arrest Frye and then the unrest began that ultimately lasted for six days of rioting and left “thirty-four persons, mostly black, dead; 1,032 wounded, and 3,952 arrested”.
