jan 1, 1874 - San Fernando Established
Description:
In 1874 , San Fernando became the valley’s first organized community, thus earning the title “First City of the Valley”. San Fernando was nicknamed “The Mission City” because of its proximity to the San Fernando Mission that was established in 1797 and on whose former property the city emerged. While California was still a Mexican territory, a mixture of Spanish, Indian, and Mexican residents arrived and settled in the valley.
