jan 1, 1936 - Gila Country

Description:

After a long history of educational segregation and ineffective enforcement of the Arizona civil code of 1913, segregation and the attempt at "Americanization" continued to occur to Mexican children within Arizona. The public of Gila County therefore protested and submitted a petition to the state attorney general requesting a response to the separation of Latino students from their European and white counterparts/peers. Although the efforts of Latino organizations and Gila County public were ignored, it definitely raised awareness to the segregation Mexican/Latino students were facing within the Arizona educational system.
