jul 1, 1940 - Luisa Moreno moves to San Diego

Description:

Luisa Moreno was Guatemalan-born activist that moved to San Diego as more Marine bases were established. She was active in organizing cannery workers in the 1930s and 1940s. In July 1940, she worked on a labor union newspaper and to continue her organizing activities among the women cannery workers. She was working with cannery workers while San Diego became more conservative, both politically and culturally. Japanese Americans were sent to War Relocation Authority Camps, and at the same time, a disproportionate amount of Chicanos were drafted for WW2. Chicanos did not have jobs that allowed them to have a deferral status. Chicanos had jobs in shipyards, petroleum industry, and agriculture.
