Description:

European enlightenment thought was becoming increasingly popular in the colonies. Examples:
1. Natural Rights: all humans have certain rights given by god that govs cannot take away.
2. The Social Contract: idea that the gov and the people should be in a mutually beneficial contract.
3. Separation of powers.

All of these contributed to the colonists' desire for independence as they thought the British were violating these ideas.

These ideas heavily influenced the Declaration of Independence
