jun 1, 1776 - The Founding of San Francisco

Description:

Prior to the founding of San Francisco, the valley was originally named, Chutchuii, whose land belonged to the Ohlone tribe. However, in 1774, Col. Juan Bautista de Anza was given the task to find the best location for the construction of a presidio and mission. So, in June 1776, with a squad of soldiers and two Franciscan friars, Francisco Palou and Pedro Cambon led by Lit. Jose Joaquin Moraga, renamed the valley of Chutchuii to San Francisco in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan Order.
