On January 1, 2009, Oscar Grant was fatally shot by a police officer in Fruitvale Bart. This is an important date because this was one of few incidents that made it all over the media about police brutality. Much like in the 50s and 60s the Latinx community in Fruitvale joined forces with the African-American community after Oscar Grant's death and every year since then, countless residents and supporters gather outside of Fruitvale BART to call for an end to police brutality.
