Description:
From the original plains between the Rhine and the Danube , the Carni settled, around 400 BC , in more or less large parts of the current regions of Friuli , Styria , Carinthia and northwestern Slovenia . Soon the Carni came into contact with the Veneti and with the Histri , the Liburnians and the Giapidi who had given life to the culture of the castellieri , as well as probably with the native Reti.
They ruled autonomously in these areas of upper Friuli and Cadore until about 50 BC , when, on the orders of Gaius Julius Caesar , the Romans also conquered the Alpine area of Friuli . However, it seems that the Carni were mentioned by Appiano of Alexandria during Octavian's military campaigns in Illyricum (35-33 BC) . This people was, therefore, fought again by the Romans, perhaps because they had rebelled or had not yet been completely subdued.
