jan 8, 1607 - Early Euro Colonialism Summary

Description:

Main countries: Spain, France, Netherlands, and Britain.

Spain: wanted to make $$$ and spread Christianity. Mined gold and silver. Produced sugar, tobacco, coffee, etc.

France: same motivations as Spanish. Traded fur and fish. Had a *relatively* good relationship w/ Natives.

Netherlands: wanted more $$$ and trade. Created New Amsterdam (later New York). Didn't really interact w/ Natives.

Britain: wanted $$$ and new territory (the enclosure movement meant that there was less land available. Many also wanted better living conditions and religious freedom). Joint-stock companies funded colonies (which focused on tobacco, fur, and timber). Had many conflicts w/ Natives over territory.
