The Americans were taken hostage after the Shah of Iran was accepted into the U.S for treatment of cancer. Many Iranians were angered and stoned and seized the embassy in Tehran, Iran. 66 Americans were taken hostage. The Americans were kept hostage for 444 days. Carter failed to bring back these Americans by trying to cut off trade, freeze Iranian assets, and by trying to negotiate through third parties. This event damaged Cart's presidency which gave him the lost of popularity of the American people.
