jul 1, 1971 - 26th amendment
Description:
The 26th amendment lowered the legal voting age to 18, after previously being 21. The lowering of the voting age was a hot debate during the Vietnam War. the phrase "old enough to fight, old enough to vote" was a main argument in the youth voting rights movement, as the lowest age to be drafted was 18, but these young men were denied the right to vote.
