may 4, 1970 - Kent State Shootings

Description:

The Kent State Shootings took place at Kent State University in Ohio. There were large groups of protests protesting the Vietnam War, and the Ohio National Guard was called out of fear that the protesters would become violent. The Guard opened fire on the crowd, killing 4 and injuring 9. Student strikes followed this event, causing schools across the country to close. This is important as this outraged Americans and brought more attention to the antiwar movement, allowing it to spread to even more people.
