- religious movement (originally Christian Protestant denomination)

- heterogeneous group with different understandings of Christianity

THE QUAKERS AND ABOLITIONISM:
- Quaker colonists already questioned the concept of slavery in Barbados in the 1670s, and openly denounced it in 1688
- Quaker members have campaigned against slavery in various ways. e.g. anti-slavery writing and direct action (e.g. protesting) from members like John Woolman, William Southeby and Benjamin Lay.
