may 14, 1607 - First Permanent English Settlement

Description:

On May 14th, 1607, Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America, was founded by a group of roughly 100 members of a joint venture called the Virginia Company on the banks of the James River (located near present-day Williamsburg).

Earlier English attempts at establishing settlements in North America, most notably Roanoke Colony in North Carolina (1583–90) and the short-lived Popham Colony in Maine (1607–08), founded a few months after Jamestown, ended in failure.
Jamestown, too, was brought to the brink of failure by famine, disease, and conflict with local Native American tribes before the arrival of a new group of settlers and supplies in 1610.
