Description:

The three Enforcement Acts in 1870-1871

GOALS:
- to improve conditions for black people and freed slaves: the Acts protected African Americans’ right to vote, to hold office, to serve on juries, and receive equal protection of laws
- to fight the KKK: the Acts prohibited any form of violence or intimidation to prevent the freedmen from voting
- national unity: to create a country where all races were considered equal under the law

AFTERMATH:
- KKK was banned, members were treated as criminals
