jan 25, 1972 - Shirley Chisholm

Description:

The African American Women's Movement was created by combining Civil Rights Movement and the Feminist Movement. Representative Shirley Chisholm of New York became the national symbol for these movements and was the first African American and female candidate for president of the United States.
Before that, she was the first Black woman in Congress in 1968 when she was elected to the House from her Brooklyn district but failed to become a primary.
Nevertheless, she attracted little support among African American men during her presidential campaign and during her run for Congress.
