jul 9, 1793 - 1793, The Abolition Act
Description:
The Abolition Act was passed in 1793 from the ideas of John Graves Simcoe. Although this act did not end slavery, it made a big impact on slavery in Upper Canada at the time. Upper Canada was the first British Colony to make moves to end slavery. During this time there were around 300 slaves in the Colony and multiple legislators owned slaves, the law didn't make this illegal but made owning slaves limited. The law freed all slaves 25 years and older and it made it illegal to bring slaves into the colony, making Upper Canada a place where American slaves could seek freedom.
