jan 1, 1808 - 1808, Simon Fraser travels the Fraser River to the coast

Description:

In 1808, Simon Fraser traveled to what Alexander Mackenzie believed was the Columbia River. On his journey, he had to travel through dangerous rapids and Hell’s Gate making him and others have to abandoned their canoe. He was upset knowing this wasn't the river as it wasn't easy to navigate and the First Nations he met were not nice. He was able to get the fur trade started in the interior of British Columbia, helping prevent American expansion in the south. David Thompson who was a map maker was very impressed with Fraser and gave the river his name and now it is known as Fraser River.
