may 2, 1670 - 1670, The Hudson’s Bay Company is charted
Description:
In 1665, two coureurs de bois, Pierre-Esprit and Médard Des Groseilliers wanted to expand the fur trade, but the French rejected their ideas and took away their fur. They got the idea to establish a fur trade through the Hudson Bay and they proposed it to King Charles II and he sent them on a test run. When they came back with fur he was very impressed. In 1670 King Charles II claimed Hudson Bay and named it Rupert's Land after claiming the land he gave a charter to the Hudson Bay Company. This gave the HBC control of all lands that were drained by all rivers coming into Hudson's Bay. The HBC was created to make fur trading easier to be done through Hudson Bay to reach the interior of the continent. This would lead to easier access to fur and would also make this very profitable.
