In February of 1763, Britain, France, and Spain all signed the Treaty of Paris. In the terms of the treaty, France had to give up almost all of its possessions in North America to Britain and Spain. Spain got to take all French territories west of the Mississippi, which is known as Louisiana. Britain got New France and all French territories east of the Mississippi. France did get to keep some things despite giving almost everything up, and they got to keep two small islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and fishing rights off Newfoundland.
