On Jan 18, 1778, English captain James Cook stumbled upon the Islands. When Cook arrived the natives thought that he was their god Lono who was believed to be the god of fertility, agriculture, rainfall, music, and peace. The Hawaiians thought this due to the fact his arrival coincided with the December Makahiki festival. this would lead to a relationship between Cook and Kamehameha
