The tension between America and France was very high and America, not wanting immigrants to sympathize with the French, released the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1789. The Alien Acts of 1789 increased the requirement to be a citizen from 2 to 14 years. It also authorized the president to deport immigrants and have their arrest and deportation during wartime. The Sedition Act of 1789 made it illegal for anyone to publish writings against the government.
