Description:
-According to the law, the age of the girls, married, and unmarried ladies for the consent of sexual intercourse was raised to twelve years from the earlier age of ten years.
-The violation of the law would be treated as rape and result in criminal prosecution.
The bill was introduced in the Legislative Council of the Governor-General of India in Calcutta by Sir Andrew Scoble, and the act was the amendment of the Indian Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure, Section 375, 1882, ("Of Rape").
The law was signed by the Governor-General and Viceroy Lord Lansdowne.
Additional Information
The sufferings of two young girls Rukhmabai and Phulmoni Dasi led to this act.
The law was repealed in the year 1950.
