After finding the lost expedition, the Spanish drove the natives out of their village in Darien, as the soil was fertile and they believed a settlement there would be successful.
To ensure a successful settlement, Balboa:
- Made the Spanish build houses and plant crops
- Controlled the natives through a combination of friendliness and force
- Took large amounts of food and gold from the natives
