feb 24, 1495 - 550 native slaves sent to Spain
Description:
Once they arrived in Cadiz, about 200 of them had died on the journey, and many others were ill. Isabella was horrified at the treatment of them. Although African slaves were often brought to Spain, she had intended to convert the native Americans to Christians, not to enslave them.
She sent most of them back to Haiti, used some to row her ships, and trained others as interpreters.
