jun 7, 1494 - The Treaty of Tordesillas

Description:

Since Columbus had arrived back into Portugal first, King John of Portugal believed that Portugal had a right to the New World. However, until an agreement was made, no ship was allowed to sail to the New World without Spanish permission.

Since part of the reason they funded Columbus was so that they could spread Christianity, Isabella enlisted the support of the Pope for Spanish rights to the New World.

Eventually, they agreed to draw a line from the North to South poles, about 2000 km West of the Cape Verde islands. All lands to the West would be Spanish, and all lands to the East (except the Canary Islands) would be Portuguese.
